How did this happen?

It is a very strange path that has led me to this place. I have always appreciated and collected the bizarre and after cleaning out my elderly aunt's house, I found myself the owner of much unwanted figurines, salt and pepper shakers, vases and some items beyond classification. Surrounded by these new acquisitions, my print studio quickly became a temple of post-war trinkets.

Of course the next logical step was to create dioramas starring my new cast of characters. The camera flashed and many jpegs were recorded. Once I printed off some of these photos I decided to experiment with transferring the image onto handmade Japanese tissues by passing the printed photos and the tissue through my etching press. With the aid of various solutions, a ghostly image of the original was transferred, and my Phototypes were born.

One of the galleries that represents me saw the new work and instantly fell in love with them. "When I saw the call for UpART at the Galdstone, I knew Tim's new kitsch series was perfect for it" says Frances of Frances Thomas Art Projects. We proposed creating an installation of prints, figures and even an interactive still-life. I'm excited to say we are "in".

The image to the right is the resulting print from one of the first still lifes I photographed. Pinocchio and Cactus - Phototype on Japanese tissue, 2011.
